At the onset of the 2016-2017 hockey season, area coaches and advisors came together to launch a new hockey program to convene the top players in the region to train and compete at a higher level of play and remain in the area. As a result, the Appalachian Elite Hockey Club was formed. In its inaugural season, the Appalachian Elite fielded a 15U AA team that was comprised of players from Johnstown, Altoona, Indiana, and State College. The team competed in several tournaments and exhibition games throughout the season.
Building on the success of that inaugural season, the Appalachian Elite continued to expand over the following three seasons with considerable growth and interest increasing annually. In the spring of 2020, the Appalachian Elite expanded to include a spring hockey program with teams from 10U through 18U. Unfortunately, the teams never got to compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Appalachian Elite Hockey Club is gearing up for the 2020-21 season with teams at the 10U, 12U and 14U levels. The program is a collaboration of several area youth hockey programs, leagues and facilities working together to provide these opportunities locally. As a result, players can still remain committed to their respective PAHL organization and participate with the Appalachian Elite for additional competition that is PAHL schedule friendly. All of this with a cost-friendly approach in mind.
